How long does CCMP preparation take?

For a candidate who already meets the experience threshold, six weeks of about six to twelve hours each is a workable plan. The ACMP publishes no recommended study time, so this schedule is our own proposal, built on the facts the ACMP does publish: 21 hours of Standard-aligned training, an exam of 150 multiple-choice questions over three hours, and up to three attempts within one year.

We follow a fictional candidate, Amira Haddad, a project manager with a four-year degree and about five years of change work on ERP and reorganisation projects. She works full time, so she studies on weekday evenings and one weekend morning. Her case is invented, but the arithmetic holds for anyone in a similar position.

Weeks 1 to 3: what to do with the 21 hours and the five process groups

Spend the first three weeks on one 21-hour course, about seven hours a week, and map every module to one of the five process groups of the ACMP Standard for Change Management©. Those groups are evaluating change impact and organisational readiness, formulating the strategy, developing the plan, executing it, and closing the effort.

The training must be completed within the seven years before you apply, and an instructor must be present, in a classroom or online. The ACMP accepts blended formats that mix self-study and instructor-led portions, and QEP™ courses are pre-qualified, as the ACMP training FAQ explains. The requirement itself is detailed in our article on the 21-hour CCMP training requirement.

On 7 October 2026, the self-paced CCMP Certification Exam Prep course from Leanova Academy costs US$595 (list price US$995), has 45 modules, 21 QEP hours (code Q000607) and one year of access. It fits a three-week rhythm at roughly 15 modules a week. Leanova is a training provider and an official ACMP QEP; it awards a certificate of completion, and only the ACMP awards the CCMP after its exam. Other courses exist, and our comparison of the best CCMP exam prep courses lists them with the same dated facts.

Amira keeps a one-page grid with the five groups as columns. After each module she writes a line under the matching group: a deliverable, a decision, a typical trap. By the end of week 3 the grid is her revision sheet.

Week 4: preparing the application file

Prepare the application in week 4, right after the course, because the training certificate is fresh and the experience hours still need to be counted. The ACMP eligibility page sets two routes on 7 October 2026: a four-year degree plus 4,200 hours (three years) of change management experience, or secondary education plus 7,000 hours (five years).

Experience hours have no time limit; only the training has the seven-year window. Amira lists each project with dates, her role and the share of her time that was change work, and she keeps the arithmetic visible so the total clearly exceeds 4,200. The steps of the filing are covered in our guide to the CCMP application process.

Weeks 5 and 6: how to use three mock exams

Use the three mocks as diagnostics, one at the start of week 5, one at the end of week 5 and one in the middle of week 6, each taken in a single three-hour sitting at 150 questions. The point is to rehearse the real format, including fatigue in the last hour, and to find which process group loses you points.

Leanova sells a CCMP Practice Exam and Mock Test of 450 questions, arranged as three 150-question mocks, at US$95 with one year of access on 7 October 2026. The same 450 questions are included in the CCMP and MCMP bundles, for instance the Mastery bundle of 31 hours at US$895. Any other question bank of similar size works for the method below.

  1. Sit the mock without notes, in one block, at the hour you plan to take the real exam.
  2. Sort every wrong answer under one of the five process groups, not under a chapter title.
  3. Reread the grid lines for the weakest group and rewrite two of them from memory.
  4. Retake only the missed questions two days later.

How is the exam scheduled, and what happens after a fail?

The exam is taken by online proctoring with Kryterion or at a Kryterion test centre, and you get up to three attempts within one year of application acceptance. The ACMP exam preparation page describes the format on 7 October 2026: 150 multiple-choice questions in three hours. It does not publish the pass mark, and it states that only standard English keyboards are supported.

We suggest booking the slot once the application is accepted, with a date about ten days out, so the third mock lands before it. Check the system requirements for online proctoring early, since a webcam or room problem on the day costs more than any missed module. The ACMP publishes no pass rate, so any figure you read elsewhere has no official source.

If an attempt fails, the fee for a retake is US$300 for members and US$375 for non-members. Amira would use her mock results as a map: the group with the lowest score gets the first revision block, and she waits for a mock average she is comfortable with before paying for the next slot. Since the three attempts must fit inside one year, a gap of three to four weeks between attempts leaves room for all of them.

The plan as a table

The six weeks add up to roughly 45 to 50 hours. Those hours are our estimate for a full-time worker, not an ACMP figure, except the 21 training hours.

WeekFocusEstimated effortOutput
1Course modules 1 to 15, grid of the five groups7 hoursGrid started
2Course modules 16 to 307 hoursGrid completed for groups 1 to 3

After a pass, the credential is valid for three years and renewal asks for 60 professional development units, as the ACMP renewal page shows. Start logging them from day one.
