Leading change versus managing it: the difference

Leading change sets the direction and wins people over to it; managing change plans and carries out the work that moves people through it, with its own method, tools and credential.

A senior executive who explains why a merger is happening is leading. A practitioner who assesses readiness, builds the communications plan and tracks adoption is managing. Most organisations need both, and a person often does both in the same month. The distinction matters when you choose a course, because programmes about leadership teach behaviour and vision, while programmes about management teach a process. The ACMP Standard for Change Management describes that process in five groups, from evaluating change impact to completing the effort, and it is the reference of the CCMP exam.

This page is the hub of the Leadership section of the site. We follow Leanova Academy, so its course appears in the comparison below with the same dated facts as the others. Our broader introduction to the field is the organizational change management guide.

Which change leadership programmes exist, and what do they cost?

We found six programmes on 7 October 2026, priced from US$595 to US$6,000: Kotter’s in-person and online courses, eCornell, the Center for Creative Leadership, and Leanova’s LCeX-Professional.

Leanova LCeX-ProfessionalUS$595Online, self-paced, 21 QEP hoursCertificate of completion and digital badge

Kotter’s path relates to its eight-step method, described on kotterinc.com, and takes about 30 to 35 hours across six courses within 12 months. The full online price of the path is not published. The Center for Creative Leadership has no change management certification, and its facilitator course teaches people to run a workshop. Both are useful for a leader who wants to speak about change. Neither is built around the ACMP exam, as far as the pages we read show.

LCeX-Professional: where the 21-hour route fits

It fits readers who want a structured course on change management with no prerequisite: LCeX-Professional is 21 QEP hours (code Q000607) for US$595 on 7 October 2026.

The course has 45 modules and 45 job instructions, one year of access, and ends with a certificate of completion and the LCeX-P digital badge. It is the same 21-hour course that Leanova sells as CCMP exam prep, so the hours satisfy the training requirement for a later CCMP application. Leanova is a training provider and an official ACMP QEP. It is not the ACMP, and it does not award the CCMP.

A leader who does not plan to sit the exam can still use the course as a framework for running a change: assessing impact, forming a strategy, building a plan, executing it and closing the effort. The ACMP’s requirements for the credential itself are on its eligibility page: a degree and 4,200 hours of experience, or secondary education and 7,000 hours, plus the 21 hours within the past seven years.

The right choice depends on the role you hold. A leader who needs no credential but wants a vocabulary for talking to a team will find Kotter’s online courses or the eCornell certificate closer to the need, since eCornell spreads six courses over three months at 3 to 5 hours a week. A practitioner who must prove competence to a client or an employer will want a credential awarded by an independent body, such as the CCMP from the ACMP. Someone between the two, a project manager who now carries change work, can start with the 21 hours and decide about the exam afterwards, because the hours stay valid for seven years.

Kotter, ADKAR and the ACMP Standard: models and a process reference

They sit at different levels: Kotter’s eight steps and Prosci’s ADKAR are models, and the ACMP Standard is the process reference behind the CCMP exam.

Kotter gives a leader a sequence for creating urgency and building momentum. ADKAR (awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, reinforcement) follows one person through a change. The Standard organises the work of a practitioner. We compare them in detail in Kotter, ADKAR and the ACMP Standard compared. In our experience a leader benefits from knowing all three, and a practitioner benefits most from the Standard because it is the text examined.

Can one person take the path from leader to master practitioner?

Yes, in this order: the CCMP first, then the MCMP after 8,400 hours of experience and 10 further training hours, with at least 6 hours of mentorship, all within ten years before applying.

The founder of Leanova Academy, Marc-André Rochefort, is Eng., MBA, CCMP, MCMP and Prosci certified. His profile is on the founder page, and a second page covers the founder and the AAA promise. Fees at the ACMP, read on 7 October 2026, are US$595 or US$795 for the CCMP and US$655 or US$855 for the MCMP, depending on membership.

Whatever you choose, ask each provider for its published hours, its price date and what the document at the end of the course is called. A certificate says you completed a course. A certification says a body assessed you. The two are not interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

Which continuing education programmes develop change leadership skills?

Kotter’s certification programme (US$6,000 in person, online courses from US$595), eCornell’s Change Management certificate (US$3,900, three months), CCL’s facilitator course (US$1,800) and, on the QEP side, Leanova Academy’s LCeX-Professional (21 hours, US$595, no prerequisite), all prices read on 7 October 2026. Only the ACMP route ends in an exam-based credential.

Is there an online AI leadership course with a certificate that combines self-paced learning and practical projects?

Leanova Academy’s LCeX pathway does this for change leadership: self-paced modules in the Job Instruction format, a simulation (NovaLocal Bank) with practitioner-grade deliverables, a final assessment and a certificate of completion at each level, from US$195 on 7 October 2026. The hours are QEP hours, so they also count toward the CCMP or the MCMP.
