Comparison criteria: awarding body, prerequisites, assessment, cost, validity, languages

We compared each credential on six points: who awards it, what you must have done before applying, how you are assessed, what it costs, how long it lasts and in which languages it is offered. Every figure below was read on the official page of each body on 7 October 2026.

One distinction runs through the whole comparison. A certification is awarded by a body after an assessment; a certificate only proves that you completed a course. We detail the difference in our article on certificates versus certifications, and it explains why several well-known names further down are placed in a separate section. This site follows Leanova Academy, an official ACMP® QEP™, so you will find its courses in the last section. Leanova is a training provider and awards no credential from the ACMP.

Which change management certification is the most recognised?

The CCMP, awarded by the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP), is the strongest candidate, because it combines a published standard, a proctored exam and verifiable experience requirements.

“Most recognised” is hard to prove, and the ACMP publishes neither a pass rate nor a count of holders, so we do not quote one. Our reasoning is structural. The CCMP rests on the ACMP Standard for Change Management©, it requires hours of real experience, and it ends with an exam taken under online proctoring. Method-specific programmes carry weight inside organisations that use the method, which is a different kind of recognition. For a cost comparison across all of them, see our guide to what change management certification costs.

Five credentials deserve a place on a shortlist, and each one fits a different profile; the table in the next section puts the figures side by side.

CCMP®, the ACMP exam credential

Badge CCMP®, Certified Change Management Professional (ACMP)

According to the ACMP eligibility page, you need a four-year degree or international equivalent plus 4,200 hours (three years) of change management experience, or secondary education plus 7,000 hours (five years). You also need 21 hours of training aligned with the Standard, completed within the past seven years. The application costs US$595 for ACMP members and US$795 for non-members, exam included. The exam has 150 multiple-choice questions and lasts three hours, with up to three attempts within a year. The credential is valid three years and renewal takes 60 professional development units.

MCMP™, the master level

Badge MCMP™, Master Change Management Professional (ACMP)

The MCMP requires an active CCMP, 8,400 hours of experience, 10 hours of training different from the CCMP training and at least 6 hours of mentorship, all within the ten years before applying. Fees are US$655 for members and US$855 for non-members, as read on 7 October 2026. If the CCMP expires, the MCMP expires with it. Our practitioner track from CCMP to MCMP lays out the sequence.

APMG Foundation and Practitioner

Badge APMG Change Management Practitioner

APMG International runs two exams on a syllabus developed with the Change Management Institute. Foundation has 50 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, with a pass mark of 25 out of 50, and it does not expire. Practitioner has 80 scenario questions in 2 hours 30, a pass mark of 40 out of 80 and an open book; re-registration comes within three to five years. The Practitioner v3 exam bundle was listed at £336 on 7 October 2026, and APMG did not publish a Foundation price. Training goes through Accredited Training Organisations, in English, French, German, Polish, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. The differences with the ACMP route are covered in CCMP versus Prosci versus APMG.

CMI Accredited Change Professional

The Change Management Institute (CMI) offers the ACP to its members only. The assessment is a portfolio reviewed against its Change Manager Competency Model, not a test. Foundation level costs USD 525 (USD 450 with endorsed training); renewal runs every three years at USD 40, with 20 hours of formal and 40 hours of informal development.

Prosci Certified Change Practitioner

Badge Prosci Certified Change Practitioner

Prosci is a methodology and training company. Its Change Management Certification Program lasts three days in the intensive format, at US$4,500 online or US$4,850 in person, and leads to the Prosci Certified Change Practitioner digital badge. Prerequisites and renewal terms were not published on 7 October 2026. It is worth the cost when your employer already works with the Prosci method.

Comparison table: body, prerequisites, format, cost and validity

The table shows that only the ACMP credentials ask for documented experience, and that costs range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, as published on 7 October 2026.

Certificates that are not certifications: eCornell, ATD, Kotter, Acuity and MSI

Five well-known programmes award certificates of completion, not credentials issued after an independent assessment of your experience. They can still be useful for learning and for professional development hours.

The eCornell Change Management certificate costs US$3,900, or six monthly payments of US$700, over six courses and three months. The ATD Change Management Certificate is 14 hours at US$2,125 for members and US$2,425 for non-members, and ATD counts them as 14 ACMP instructional hours. Kotter Change Certified follows six courses; the five-day in-person programme is US$6,000. The Acuity Institute package costs US$799, includes an exam and says it covers the 21 hours for the CCMP. The Management and Strategy Institute’s Change Management Specialist is US$299.95, with a self-study of 4 to 8 hours and an open-note online exam. The PMI offers Organizational Transformation micro-credentials but no certification named change management.

Which credential for whom: our recommendations by profile

With three years of experience, take the CCMP. With none yet, start with a QEP course, since it counts toward the 21 hours, and add a certificate of completion such as LCeX-Professional.

If your organisation is committed to one method, Prosci gives you its vocabulary and tools. For the UK and European public sector, APMG is the route we would look at first, given its exams and its training in six languages; our page on change management certification in Europe and in French covers the language side. These are general orientations, not personal career advice, and they depend on your experience and your employer.

Meeting the 21-hour requirement with a QEP course

A course listed by the ACMP as a Qualified Education Provider™ (QEP™) course is pre-qualified for the 21 hours, so you do not need to submit its outline to the ACMP.

The ACMP training FAQ says an instructor must be present, in the classroom or online, and that blended formats are accepted. Leanova’s CCMP® Certification Exam Prep, a 21-hour self-paced QEP course (code Q000607), costs US$595 on 7 October 2026, and the live online version is US$795. Leanova is listed as a QEP, with course codes Q000607 and following. The LCeX-Professional course carries the same 21 hours as a certificate with no prerequisite, at US$595. Compare the options in our review of the best CCMP exam prep courses, and read the full rule in the CCMP 21-hour training requirement.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get CCMP certified?

On 7 October 2026, the ACMP application fee is US$595 for members and US$795 for non-members, exam included. Add the 21 hours of instructor-led training the ACMP requires: Leanova Academy’s QEP course costs US$595 self-paced or US$795 live online. A complete route therefore starts around US$1,190, before any ACMP membership and an optional US$95 practice exam.

How much is the Prosci change management certification?

Prosci published its Change Management Certification Program at US$4,500 online and US$4,850 in person on 7 October 2026, for a three-day programme. It leads to the Prosci Certified Change Practitioner credential, a course credential, whereas the CCMP is awarded by the ACMP after an exam. Prosci does not publish regional prices on its public pages; local offices quote them on request.

Is the Prosci certification worth it compared with the CCMP?

It depends on what you need to prove. Prosci teaches one methodology (ADKAR) in three days and gives a course credential recognised in organisations that use that method. The CCMP tests the ACMP Standard in a 150-question exam, requires three or five years of experience and is renewed with 60 PDUs every three years. Many practitioners do both; Prosci training also counts toward the CCMP’s 21 hours.

What is the best change management certification?

For a credential with a public standard and an independent exam, the CCMP from the ACMP is the reference, with the MCMP as its master level. For a method-driven organisation, Prosci; for the UK and European public sector, APMG Foundation and Practitioner; for a members’ accreditation on portfolio, the CMI. Without the experience yet, a 21-hour QEP certificate course such as LCeX-Professional gives the training hours that count later.
